Wild Turkey Rare Breed Bourbon Review

Another offering from the folks at Wild Turkey, who never cease to surprise us. At this point, Wild Turkey is truly an American icon. And we love the story on how this bourbon got its name—a turkey hunting trip that one of its marketing executives went on and took samples. The next year, the friends asked for some of that “wild turkey.” It’s a great story!

Wild Turkey has a Rare Breed society for bourbon enthusiasts. Sign up here to keep abreast of Rare Breed sightings. And to accompany the Rare Breed society, an offering of Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof Bourbon. The Rare Breed bourbon is a blend of 6, 8 and 12 year Wild Turkey bourbons and is bottled at bottle proof, meaning that there is no water added to the bourbon to water it down. It’s bottled at the proof at which it comes out of the barrel. So, it’s a Rare Breed indeed!

Visually, the Rare Breed bourbon was clear with a medium brownish-amber color. On the nose, the bourbon had a pronounced intensity of caramel, butterscotch, vanilla, honey, dates, rye, leather and alcohol. On the palate, the Rare Breed had an extreme spiciness (it made my mouth tingle) with flavors of caramel, honey, vanilla, rye, dates, raisins and allspice. Long finish.

The next time you want to spice up a cocktail, try the Rare Breed!
