This week’s drink is perfect for Autumn and a nice change of pace from many of the ultra-sweet cocktails that make the rounds on Halloween.  You can sip the Great Pumpkin while you wait for the Great Pumpkin to appear (or while you watch “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” on TV).

The level of DIY-ness in this cocktail is up to you! I juiced apples from a local farm but used organic pumpkin puree from a can. You may choose to use store-bought juice or juice from a local producer. You may opt for fresh pumpkin puree. Whatever you do, this drink is great for sitting by the fire (or getting ready for some trick or treating).

Ingredients:
1 1/2 oz. Cognac
2 oz. fresh, unfiltered apple juice or cider
2 tbs. pumpkin puree
1 tsp. maple syrup
1 tsp. pumpkin pie spices*

Directions:
Mix the pumpkin pie spices with the apple juice. Then pour that mixture and the rest of the ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a cinnamon stick, if desired.

*Pumpkin pie spice can be bought pre-mixed or you can make your own with this ratio: mix together 1 part ground nutmeg, 1 part allspice or ground cloves, 2 parts ground ginger, 4 parts ground cinnamon.
