I was a spectator at the Macallan Ice Ball Plunge at this year’s Tales of the Cocktail when I was struck with an epiphany. The booze industry is even more philanthropic than I thought. Almost every person in the industry that we know has donated time, booze, classes, swag and more. Even DOTW has gotten into the act, sponsoring the Martini Luge at the Silicon Valley Humane Society’s Fur Ball and donating multiple classes as fundraising items.
Friday night kicked off the soiree with the Opening Gala, an event that takes over the entire New York Public Library and is attended by thousands of people. Literally, at the Gala, hundreds of classic and innovative cocktails are served.
I wanted to highlight a spirit from a micro-distillery. Not so long ago, no-one would have believed the current renaissance in spirits and distilling was even possible. Distilling has been the last of the businesses to rise from the ashes of Prohibition.
The inaugural Manhattan cocktail classic kicked off last Friday night with a booze laden gala at the New York Public Library.
