Grapefruit-Rosemary Mojito

post icon

It’s grilling weather where I am, so I was looking for something I could sip on the deck while cooking over the coals. The rosemary bush in my yard and the giant red grapefruits I bought at Whole Foods called to me, so I put them together in a variation on one of my absolute favorite warm-weather concoctions: the Mojito.

I ran out of sugar to make simple syrup, so for my second one I … Read more

La Estrella

This is the time of year before summer  gives us the kind of good weather that makes for lazy afternoons on the deck or at a backyard barbecue. For laid-back sipping, I like this refreshing and light cocktail that’s like margarita’s mellow cousin.

I used the beautiful Rio Star red grapefruits that are available right now, along with fresh lime, mint, tequila and triple sec. Estrella means star in Spanish, so I gave the drink … Read more

1 oz lime juice
4-5 oz grapefruit juice or soda
1 pinch of salt

Directions:
Build in a tall glass … Read more

Ingredients:
2 parts vodka
3 wedges peeled and seeded grapefruit
½ teaspoon sugar
1 part triple sec
Turbinado sugar for rimming the glass… Read more

Inspired by Blanche Devereaux in The Golden Girls (1985), played by Rue McClanahan.

One often thinks of southern belles as meek and mild types, but Blanche Devereaux kept her roommates’ eyes wide open with her saucy tales of romance and not-so clandestine canoodling. Though married most of her life to her high school sweetheart, George, Blanche wasn’t about to let having fifty years under her belt slow her down. Perhaps Blanche said it best when … Read more

Ultimate Bell Pepper Cocktail

post icon

I had a dream once about a bell-pepper cocktail served in a hollowed out bell pepper. Last night, I made half the dream come true. (Serving it out of a bell pepper seemed messy and inconvenient.)

My friend grew some beautiful bell peppers and was game for helping me figure out how to best use the sweet and spicy flavor in a cocktail. What we came up with was tasty and unlike any cocktail I’ve … Read more
