Created by owner Giovanni DeNigris at Trattoria Trullo in Chicago, this Valentine’s Day cocktail owes itself to one man’s undying love and passion for a beautiful woman (or at least the Campari).
As the story goes, Davide Campari, the youngest son of Campari’s creator, fell madly in love with one of Italy’s most popular opera singers, Lina Cavalieri, in the early 1900s. Davide met Lina after she had modeled for one of Campari’s groundbreaking advertisements. He fell so deeply in love with the opera singer that he decided to follow her to Nice and then eventually on an international opera tour Having worked for his Father, Davide established export markets for Campari across the globe as he followed his true-heart’s desire from city to city.
