Zombies Are Hot This Halloween

Thanks to The Walking Dead, zombies are this year’s vampires. And that is saying something. So, what could be better this Halloween than dressing up as a zombie and serving up some Zombie cocktails? You couldn’t have a hotter theme for this year’s Halloween party.

According to the Dave Wondrich, the professor of liquid libations, the Zombie is an old drink. It was allegedly invented by Don the Beachcomber in the 1930s to provide relief for a bad hangover, became popular at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York and then became a tiki icon. There is a reason many bars and cocktail lounges imposed a two-Zombie maximum. We can only imagine how many zombies the drink has created over the years.

Like many drinks that made it into the tiki hall of fame, the Zombie has many versions. When we first started Drink of the Week, Zombies were largely drunk blended and that’s what we recommended. (Can you imagine recommending a blended drink now? I still like them but they are seriously out of fashion.) This lead me to do some research and I found a number of recipes for the Zombie. I found two that I really liked. Not surprisingly, these drinks came from Dave Wondrich and Jeff Berry, tiki aficionado extraordinaire.
