Mexican Hot Chocolate - This Week’s Drink Recipe

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

dotw logoOK, I took a bit of a break, but I’ve been traveling. Got that old day job to take care of, ya know. While I was back in New York City, I needed this week’s drink to combat the chill and quench my thirst for Tequila.

Mexican-Hot-Chocolate.jpgMexican Hot Chocolate

Tequila (this recipe uses Hornitos Plata)
2 cups milk
1 disk of Mexican chocolate
Whipped cream

Warm the milk and chocolate in a saucepan. Stir with a whisk until the chocolate is melted and the mixture begins to boil. Remove from the heat and froth the chocolate with a whisk.

Add one part Hornitos Plata for every five parts of hot chocolate. Finish with dollop of whipped cream.

This Week’s Drink - Charro Negro

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

dotw logoThe month of October begins preparation for one of Mexico’s most celebrated and historic holidays, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) which falls on November 1 and 2. charro_negro.jpgTequila Herradura, one of the world’s most revered and storied premium tequila, is featuring the Herradura Charro Negro, referring to the traditional cowboy of Mexico who sometimes dresses in black when mourning a loved one, as its drink of the month in recognition of the holiday.

This authentic Mexican drink is quickly becoming a staple all over the U.S. Many people will celebrate Day of the Dead by creating some of their favorite recipes as an offering to honor their lost loved ones. The Herradura’s Charro Negro is simple and easy to make pairing Tequila Herradura Anejo with your favorite cola.

Charro Negro

2 ounces Tequila Herradura Anejo
4 ounces Cola
Squeeze of lime juice

In a tall glass with ice mix the Herradura Anejo and cola. Squeeze with lime.

This Week’s Drink - Three Amigos

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

dotw logoSeptember 16th marks the day in 1810 that Mexico declared independence from Spain. This authentic Mexican drink embodies the three colors of the Mexican flag – green, white and red. It also represents the traditional style of enjoying tequila – straight! However, this cocktails is not a shot; it’s for sipping.

Three-Amigos-con-Herradura.jpg

Three Amigos con Herradura consists of a shot glass of fresh lime juice, a shot glass of premium Tequila Herradura and a shot glass of fresh and flavorful Sangrita. ( Sangrita is a traditional accompaniment to Tequila. While there are many recipes for Sangrita, most contain tomato juice, lime juice, chili sauce, pureed onions and salt )

To Make:
Pour separately into tall shot glasses

2 oz. Tequila Herradura Silver
2 oz. Sangrita
2 oz. Lime juice

This is a variation of a drink that has long been enjoyed in Jalisco, the Mexican State where Tequila in made. One first takes a sip of the Tequila, then chases it with a sip of Sangrita and lime juice. Take it slow & enjoy.

Happy Birthday Mexico!

New Rules for College Football Fans to Live By

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

orange_turf.jpgOK, I know this site is about cocktails, not College Football. However, being a huge fan of both, I felt the need to share this clever list of rules from ESPN.com’s Page 2.

Here’s a sample of some rules that apply to us “of age” fans:

“27. You are allowed to start tailgating six hours before kickoff.
27a. If you want to remember the game, do not drink heavily during those six hours.
27b. Four hours of drinking is more reasonable.

28. Always yield to the rich alumni driving the decked-out Winnebagos.
28a. They mix the best drinks.
28b. And they might be hiring you in six months.

29. If you have a TV at your tailgate, you must expect and allow other fans to congregate around your area and sneak a peek. Share your bounty!

What is also very cool here is that Page 2 ended this list of 100 at 57 and wants all of us to help round it out.

To keep you all from getting thirsty, here’s a great Football Themed Cocktail courtesy of Jose Cuervo.

Read the whole list and post your own rules:

This Week’s Drink - Lijit Cocktail

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

big_logo.png
This week’s drink goes out to Lijit, the Colorado (Go Buffs!) company that supplies site search for all of you loyal Drink of the Week readers.

lijit2.jpgWe created this drink specially for the hard working folks at Lijit, who when not helping you to find great cocktails on Drink of the Week, enjoy Tequila and Midori.

They also had an arbitrary iPhone giveaway and and picked yours truly as a winner, for giving them inspiration every Friday afternoon. So look out for lots more posts from my new iPhone just like this one! It takes some great photos, too,
Cheers
lijit_cocktail.jpg

To celebrate we gathered up some ingredients from the bar (see iphone photo) and crated the Lijit Cocktail. We used our new toy to put together much of this post, what a huge step up from the SideKick II I was rocking.

I actually used the browser to post most of this!! Pretty Cool.

Thanks to Tara and the whole crew at Lijit!

Here’s the Recipe

1 1/2 oz . Silver Tequila
1/2 oz. Midori
1/4 oz. SOHO Lychee Liqueuer
1/2 oz. Pinappple Juice
Splash Lime Juice

Combine ingredients in a shaker or mixing glass filled with ice. Stir and strain into a chilled cocktail glass and serve.
Garnish with lime wheel.

Thanks Again, Lijit!
(photos were taken in my kitchen with my nifty new iPhone, yea Lijit!)
