Spirted Punch

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

spirited-punch.jpg

The word “punch” is derived from the Hindu word “panch or paunch” meaning “5”. Thus, there are typically five main components to a punch- Spirits, spice, citrus, water (or other dillutant, eg. Tea) and a sweetener. This is a modern interpretation of this classic 17th/18th century “punch service” style of imbibing.

Spirted Punch

5 oz. Rittenhouse 100 Rye
2 oz. Domaine de Canton
2 oz. 42 Below Manuka Honey
14 oz. orange oolong tea
1 ½ oz. vanilla sugar
4 oz. fresh orange juice
1 oz. lemon juice
3 pieces orange peel

Place sugar in punch bowl. Add orange peel and muddle to release oils. Add tea while still hot to dilute sugar. Add remaining ingredients, stir & finish with large cubes of ice.

Jack-o-Lantern Punch

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

jack-o-lantern-punch.jpg

No Halloween festivity is complete without a pumpkin jack-o-lantern. This year, impress your friends by serving up this delightful rum punch right inside a pumpkin! Make it at home, bring it over, serve it up, it’s as easy as pumpkin pie. Nicaragua’s Flor de Cana rum is slow-aged and highly acclaimed for its flavor profile. Subtle hints of caramel and vanilla mesh perfectly with the fresh lemon juice, cloves and apple juice to make this drink that ultimate party punch.

Jack-o-Lantern Punch

2 oz. Flor De Caña 7-year Grand Reserve
4 sugar cubes
3 oz. club soda
2 whole cloves
1 pinch of fresh nutmeg
1 oz. lemon juice
2 oz. apple juice
Toasted pumpkin seeds (optional)

Dissolve the sugar cubes in 1 oz. of club soda (this generally involves muddling to help process). Muddle the cloves with the sugar cubes. After the sugar cubes and cloves are muddled/dissolved, add the rest of the ingredients one at a time and stir as added. Add ice once all of the ingredients have been added and stirred. Stir the punch until it is chilled

Strain the punch into a glass, punch bowl, or carved out pumpkin depending on the size of the portion, top with 2oz. club soda and garnish with apple slices, cinnamon sticks and pumpkin seeds.

How to Create a Fog Effect for Your Halloween Punch

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

cauldron.jpgDry Ice turns an ordinary party punch into a spooky Halloween brew.

Start with 2 punch bowls of different sizes. The smaller bowl will hold the actual punch while the larger bowl will hold the smaller bowl and the dry ice.

With tongs or gloved hands (dry ice can freeze your skin) , place chunks of dry ice in the bigger container. Place the smaller bowl on top of the dry ice.

There is no need to add extra ice to the punch as the dry ice will cool the punch nicely.

Just before serving, pour some hot water over the dry ice. Continue to add hot water and dry ice as needed.

Be very careful when using dry ice! Handle only with tongs or heavy gloves!

Do NOT put the dry ice directly in the punch or touch it with bare skin. It Will Burn! Dry Ice should also NOT be ingested.

Skyy Infusions Pineapple

Monday, April 27th, 2009

skyyinf.pngThe folks over at Skyy have brought us another tasty infused vodka perfect for summer time cocktails.  All natural Skyy Infusions Pineapple, the markets first, is the classic premium Skyy Vodka infused with succulent pineapple.
I was consumed by the smell of fresh pineapple upon opening the bottle. Skyy Infusions Pineapple is an all natural product that is pretty much vodka and pineapple. It has a super fruity taste that is sweet and smooth. The result is a refreshingly sweet vodka that offers a new alternative to favorites like the Mai Tai and Pina Colada but without the heavy juice.

Skyy Pinapple was released to take advantage of the resurgence of Tiki cocktails across the nation.

“People enjoy Tiki cocktails because they are fun,” said Barbi Caruso, Bar Manager and Head Mixologist at Luau in Beverly Hills. “Coming to places like Luau is like a mini-vacation. You might not be able to afford a trip to Hawaii but you can still share a Scorpion Bowl with friends.”

We think they never went away.

Skyy Infusion Pineapple retails for about $20 for a 750 ml

Try this Skyy Tiki cocktail as the days get longer and warmer. Enjoy!
