Kahlua Coffee Cream Review

New from Kahlua comes Kahlua Coffee Cream. This limited edition foray into the coffee cream category simply combines Kahlua’s classic 100 percent Arabica coffee liqueur with fresh cream. The result is a rich and full of a creamy coffee flavor with just a slight hint of booziness.

At 17 proof it is tame enough to enjoy all night.

Straight up or over ice, Kahlua Coffee Cream makes a mighty fine after dinner drink. It goes great over vanilla ice cream too!

On the more serious side, it is mighty fine when mixed with vodka, I will refer to as the Black & White Russian. New York based Mixologist, Julio De Los Santos created a few cocktails to enjoy with Kahlua Coffee Cream.

Kahlua Cognaccino

1 part Kahlua Coffee Cream
1/2 part Amaretto
1 part Martell V.S. Cognac
Combine all ingredients into cocktail shaker. Shake and strain into
a flute dusted with nutmeg.

Kahlua Mexicano

1 part Kahlua Coffee Cream
1 part Kahlua Coffee Liqueur
1/2 part Sambuca
Combine all ingredients into cocktail shaker. Serve over ice in a
coffee mug.

Deadly Nightshade

Name your poison! Named after a beautiful but deadly plant, this drink has a dark color that hints at something sinister.

Deadly Nightshade halloween cocktailWe collaborated with Savvy Housekeeping on another fun Halloween cocktail.  But don’t worry, instead of using poisonous flowers or berries, we used black currant juice and black currant liqueur (also known as creme de cassis).

Deadly Nightshade

1 1/2 oz. bourbon
2 oz. black currant juice
1/2 oz. simple syrup
1/2 oz. creme de cassis
black or red grapes
club soda

Shake bourbon, juice, syrup and liqueur over ice and strain into cocktail or old-fashioned glass containing ice and chilled red or black grapes. Top off with club soda.

Pumpkin Caipirinha

Halloween pumpkin cachaca cocktailIt’s almost Halloween, so bring out the pumpkin cocktails! This one uses cachaca–a spirit similar to rum made from cane sugar.

Pumpkin Caipirinha

2 oz. Leblon cachaça
1 oz. Pumpkin spice syrup
1/4 oz. French vanilla syrup
½ oz. Frangelico
1 tbsp. Pumpkin puree
1 dash Orange juice
1 dash Nutmeg & Cinnamon

In a cocktail shaker, shake all ingredients vigorously with ice. Strain into a frosted cocktail glass. Garnish with a dash of nutmeg and cinnamon.

Mixology Monday - Satan’s Whiskers

Mixology Monday time again. We are hosted this month by Vidiot at Cocktailians who choose Vermouth as our theme. This includes sweet (Italian) or dry (French) vermouth, quinquina, aperitif wines, or any fortified, aromatized wine such as Lillet or Dubonnet.

With Halloween upon us I figured I could scare up something. I decided to go with this classic 1920s cocktail “Satan’s Whiskers” a gin cocktail sportinig both dry and sweet vermouth, orange juice, Grand Marnier and Orange Bitters. It can be made with blood orange juice if you wish to serve it blood-red rather than pumpkin-orange for your Halloween party.

Satan’s Whiskers

½ oz. gin
½ oz. dry vermouth
½ oz. sweet vermouth
½ oz. freshly squeezed orange juice
½ oz. Grand Marnier
1 dash orange bitters

Stir with ice, then strain into a stemmed cocktail glass. Garnish with orange twist.

Vampire Ritual

dotw logoWhat’s a Halloween party without the blood? Here’s a blood-red Halloween cocktail for your dark rituals.

Don’t be frightened by the inclusion of beets. They’re a great dye and impart only a very mild sweet and earthy taste to the drink.

Vampire Ritual

1 1/2 to 2 oz. gin
1/2 oz. triple sec
1 1/2 oz. blueberry-beet syrup (recipe below)
10-15 blueberries
3/4 oz. lemon juice

Muddle blueberries and syrup together, then pour mixture and all other ingredients into cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into martini glass. For garnish, use a lemon slice colored with beets.

For syrup: Boil equal parts water and sugar along with several slices of raw beet and small handful of blueberries. Strain out solids and let liquid cool before use.

Spider’s Kiss

dotw logoMidori spider's kissWith a zombie-green pallor, the Spider’s Kiss is a sweet Halloween cocktail treat with a spooky appearance.

Spider’s Kiss

1 oz. Midori melon liqueur
1 oz. vodka
Squeeze of fresh Lemon
Grenadine (optional)
Chocolate syrup

Draw a chocolate web into a cocktail glass. Place in freezer and chill. Shake Midori, vodka and lemon juice and strain into glass. For a blood effect, drizzle grenadine down the side of the glass. Garnish with a chocolate-dipped orange slice.

Ultimate Bell Pepper Cocktail

dotw logoI had a dream once about a bell pepper cocktail served in a hollowed out bell pepper. Last night, I made half the dream come true. (Serving it out of a bell pepper seemed messy and inconvenient.)

My friend at Savvy Housekeeping grew some beautiful bell peppers and was game for helping me figure out how to best use the sweet and spicy flavor in a cocktail. What we came up with was tasty and unlike any cocktail I’ve had before. It was light, refreshing, and slightly spicy. The grapefruit and the bell pepper complimented each other, since both combine sweetness with a little hint of bitter.

Bell Pepper Cocktail - Drink of the Week

Fresh-from-the-garden produce is always tasty, but I’m sure the peppers of your choice from a farmer’s market or grocery store will also give delicious results. We used green bell pepper in the cocktail and red to garnish, but any bell pepper will do. In general, green has the most spice followed by red, orange, and then yellow.  Color choice will affect the color of the drink more than the flavor in most cases.

Ultimate Bell Pepper Cocktail

2 bell pepper rings
1 tbs. mint
1 1/2 oz. grapefruit juice
1/4 oz. lemon juice (or orange juice if you want to accent sweet more)
1 1/2 oz. vodka
3/4 oz. Galliano liqueur (feel free to sub another herbal liqueur like Chartreuse)

In a cocktail shaker, muddle the mint and bell pepper with the juices. Add ice, vodka and liqueur. Shake vigorously. Strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with bell pepper ring.
