The folks at Cabo Wabo alerted us of this little known St. Patrick’s Day tidbit. More Mexicans celebrate St. Patty’s Day than the Irish – and it’s all because of the fabled Mexican Leprechaun. What, are they for real?
As the legend goes, back in 1845 the Irish potato famine forced a clan of Leprechauns to embark from their homeland in search of greener pastures. Unfortunately, they weren’t the only ones scrambling to find a new life in a foreign land. In all the chaos, a few of the Leprechauns ended up on the wrong boat headed to the Gulf of Mexico. Unsure of their surroundings, the Leprechauns began to explore their new home only to be pleasantly surprised by the native beauty of the land known as Mexico. (more…)
This St. Patrick’s Day, make the perfect Black & Tan with your very own Brolly from Bass Ale. What is it? The Brolly, a British term for umbrella, is a triangular piece of metal with holes punched around the perimeter and 3 arms for packing atop your beer glass. Using this instead of the unreliable spoon back will result in a prefect Black & Tan every time. Best of all the Brolly is free on Bass.com, except in you live in California, then you gotta pay a buck. Damn, politics.
Little did I know, people have been enjoying the Black & Tan for nearly 120 years!
Bass made this handy diagram to walk you through the process.
We met Shaylin in Las Vegas at Pure during the Stella Artois Draught Masters Competition. She wanted share an Irish drink with all of us for the upcoming holiday …and since we met over Stella, it is only appropriate that we use her (careful not to abuse though).
It is a “Dirty Blonde” (and that is a Jameson’s Public House-voted Favorite Irish Pub in Iowa-term). We like to sayo “allow the Irish to be on top”. Guinness Draft and Stella Artois. And end with “she likes to be on the bottom” or “this is one time it’s okay she finishes last”!
Dirty Blonde
Guinness
Stella Artois
Make like a Black & Tan. Take a beer glass at a 45 degree angle. First add the the Stella Artois, then slowly pour in the Guinness (over an inverted spoon is best).
The are a few thing that bring a tear to my eye and one of them is a perfectly poured Guinness. Actually, it is a poorly poured Guinness bring a tear to my eye. Here are a few rules to follow and you’ll have a perfect our every time.
First, you have to use the traditional tulip shaped British pint glass (about 20 oz.). Hold the glass at a 45 degree angle to the tap and fill until the glass is about 2/3 full. Next, let the Guinness settle for at least 3 minutes. Don’t forget about it though, nothing is worse than making a customer stare at their not yet served Guinness for too long. Finally, top of the pint and let it settle once more before serving.
Guinness Master Brewer, Fergal Murray, suggests a perfect way to drink your pint as well. He says, one should sip from the same spot on the glass. Fergal aims for the Harp above the Guinness logo.
St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner and that means green drinks. And not just green beer! To remind us of this, Tequila Herradura sent along this very green tequila & melon cocktail. The shamrock shaped lime wedges are an awesome touch. If you have the skill we highly recommend giving it a try, your guests will love it.
Green Agave by Herradura
1 1/2 oz. Herradura Silver Tequila
3/4 oz. Melon Liqueur
Squeeze of Lime
In a shaker filled with ice add tequila, melon liqueur and lime. Shake for 15 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
This year, Guinness is taking the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day well beyond wearing green and pinching those who don’t. In response to overwhelming public sentiment, Guinness is supporting Proposition 3-17, a national movement to make St. Patrick’s Day an officially-recognized holiday.
The world’s most famous Irish stout aims to collect at least one million petitioned signatures by midnight on March 16; if successful, the Guinness Brewmaster will fly to Washington D.C. on St. Patrick’s Day and demand that Congress acknowledge the will of The People. We suggest knocking Ted Kennedy’s door first.
How can you get involved?
First, sign the petition!
Then explore the cool site Guinness has set up. They put together a “Rally Kit” to help you throw your own party, er rally. The kit comes with a printable petition for all to sign, rally posters and some great Guinness recipes in case you get hungry. The site also has calendar of rallies and St. Patrick’s Day Parades, a chance for you to share your reasons for supporting Proposition 3-17 and multiple ways for you share it all with your friends.
So get to work we have 1,000,000 signatures to get!
