This fall Pernod-Ricard has partnered with the Beverage Alcohol Resource (BAR) to bring the world an online version of their Bar Smarts bartender training, education and certification program.
Bar Smarts Wired takes one through 4 modules covering distillation, the spirits, mixology basics and practical applications of mixology. The $45 course is an amazing deal. You get a top notch mixology program, complete with pdfs for easy reading and entertaining videos featuring the likes of Dan Wondrich and Dale de Groff. The also student receives a very nice & complete set of bartools (pictured) and a bag to carry it all. Of course, Bar Smarts is not all fun, you need to pass 5 tests to graduate.
So if you got the itch to take an adventure in mixology, this is it.
Apple cider is a great summertime drink — cool, refreshing and light.
If you’re a home brewer (or want to be), I highly recommend adding it to your repertoire.
I sampled a batch made by our friends at Savvy Housekeeping, who say it’s simple to make.
I can attest to the deliciousness of this recipe. But don’t be fooled by its light color into thinking it’s some wimpy concoction.
All it took was putting the apple juice in a big bottle with brown sugar and yeast, letting it ferment, and then bottling it. It made a light, delicious drink with a deceptively big kickāthe alcohol content comes to around 6%.
I was reading Esquire and came across this most interesting of cocktails.
In the ever fashionable trend of “Molecular Mixology” a few Esquire staffers created The Wiskeyburger Cocktail, described by Esquire’s David Wondrich as “a glass of tan liquid with some greenish froth on top and a dill-pickle slice hanging off the rim”
According to Wondrich the exchange went like this:
What’s this? we asked.
“Whiskeyburger.” Okay. What’s in it?
“Beefskey, tomato syrup, mustard — ” Uh, back up. Beefskey?
“Yeah, you just fat-wash a pound of ground chuck with rye….”
Made with beef infused whiskey, lettuce-onion flavored foam and mustard bitters this drink takes 4 hours to prepare (2 weeks if you count the bitters) and needs some special equipment. Hardly a quick refresher, yet it has it’s place. I am thinking this drink is perfect for an event like Super Bowl Sunday.
David tell us this cocktail actually tastes like a hamburger. I gotta get one!
It is illegal to distill spirits in the US with out a commercial license. So we don’t recommend trying this at home. Still, how cool would it be to make your own vodka, whiskey or just about anything you can think of right in your own back yard. Way more impressive that your home brewing neighbor. So 1990s. A boy can dream.
Anyway, if you do live some where it is legal or have a license, Instrcutables has several variations to choose from. The nice folks at Asylum have vetted several and recommended a design that promised a product that *hopefully* wouldn’t blind you. Remember, we don’t recommend trying this.
As we close the bar on 2007, I felt it appropriate to take a look back. Sure everyone does these lists, but it is fun to look at the year that was. I I figure, hey! why not?
So with out further ado, here are some of my favorites from 2007.
