If you want to drink, New Orleans
is a great place to go. If you want a great cocktail, New Orleans
may not be the place for you. To us, New Orleans epitomizes
the difference between being served a drink by a bartender and
a mixologist. Great cocktails are an art, which seemed
to be forgotten in New Orleans.
We had heard that New Orleans was a great place
to drink, and it certainly deserves its reputation. We know of
no other city in the United States that allows its citizens to
openly drink on the streets as long as the drinks are served
in a plastic container. However, we found that the famous
Bourbon Street reminds us of one big fraternity party with the
exception that there were numerous fifty-year-old men standing
on the street shouting at women to show their breasts in exchange
for token beads. However, we must admit that we were in
awe of the spectacle that Bourbon Street becomes once the sun
goes down.
We moved off Bourbon Street to see
if the cocktail culture was alive and well elsewhere in the city that
is synonymous with cocktails. We can happily report that we were able to obtain a few good
cocktails along the way. While in search of great cocktails, we toured
New Orleans's famous cemeteries and the French Quarter, made inquiries
about voodoo and pirates and took in the first parade of Mardi Gras -
the Krewe de Vieux, which parades New Orleans and its politics. The
parade was the highlight of our trip!
Back from New Orleans, we will be bringing you classic
New Orleans cocktails, a couple Voodoo potions, some pirate's pleasures
and martinis honoring the essence of New Orleans from Nola. You will
have the chance to win treats from the one and only Pat O'Brien's, a New
Orleans Institution. So, mix yourself up a few New Orleans classics,
pull up a chair and tune in to www.mardigras.com to enjoy Mardi Gras in
the comfort of your own home.
